Who Are Your Seven People?
Somewhere along the way, most of us stop counting our relationships and start assuming them. We know we’re loved. We know we have people.
But we rarely stop to ask, who are my seven people?

Not everyone we know. Not everyone we love. Rather, the seven people whose presence shapes our lives, the people we turn to in celebration, uncertainty, disappointment, and joy. Each one holds something unique that no one else quite does.
Nature offers us an intriguing clue. A flock of starlings doesn’t stay together because every bird watches every other bird. Instead, each bird remains aware of a handful of nearby companions. That simple pattern creates the beauty and resilience of the entire murmuration. Perhaps our lives work much the same way. We don’t need hundreds of close relationships. We need a handful of people whose presence helps us navigate life’s changing winds.
As you begin naming your seven, you’ll probably notice something interesting. They don’t all play the same role. One is the person who always makes you laugh. Another is the one you trust when life falls apart. One remembers your history. Another sees only who you are becoming, and that, too, is a gift. Instead of asking, why do I love this person? Try asking a different question: What does this person hold that no one else quite holds? Not a virtue. A function.
As you reflect on your seven, another question naturally emerges. Who among them is your secure base?
Adults need this too, although we’re often less willing to admit it. A Secure Base isn’t necessarily the person you talk to most or even the one you love the deepest. It’s the person whose steady presence gives you the courage to step into the unknown. They are the one you can return to after failure, uncertainty, or disappointment without pretending you’re okay. They don’t require you to perform before they welcome you back.
This is different from asking, who is closest to me? Closeness is about frequency and warmth. A Secure Base is about reliability when life brings its strongest winds. Sometimes those are the same person. Often, they aren’t. That’s not a failure of the relationship. It’s simply a clearer understanding of the role each person plays in your life.
Take a few moments to reflect. What does each of your seven people hold that no one else does? What’s one memory that reminds you of that gift? Who could see you at your worst and still receive you with compassion? Finally, ask yourself, who is my secure base in this season of my life?
The answer may surprise you. Over a lifetime, that role can change. It may be a parent, a spouse, a trusted friend, or even a small circle of people who together provide the steadiness you need. What matters isn’t who you think it should be. What matters is recognizing who it truly is.
Like a murmuration, our lives aren’t strengthened simply because we’re surrounded by people. They are strengthened because of the unique relationships that hold us together. Naming your seven isn’t about ranking the people you love. It’s about becoming more aware of the relationships that help you grow, give you courage, and remind you where you belong. When the winds of life begin to shift, you’ll know not only who you’re flying with, but also who helps you find your way home.
